AEO-Checkliste: 15 Punkte, die eine Seite zitierfähig machen

As of 22 October 2026 · 5 min read · by Marco Schulz

Nr.PunktWhy it mattersEffort

Three groups, three people responsible

The points can be split into three groups, which helps with dividing up the work.

Content (points 1 to 5, 9 to 11, 15) is down to the person who writes. This is the biggest lever and the cheapest one. If you're reworking an existing page, start with point 1: move the paragraph with the actual answer to the top and cut or shorten the introduction. The guide to answer pages shows what a page looks like that does exactly this consistently.

Identity (points 6, 7, 14) is down to management or the office administrator. This isn't about writing, it's about checking consistency: does the company appear as "Müller Sanitär AG" on the website, "Mueller Sanitär AG" in the commercial register and "Müller Sanitär" on Google? For a model, that's three candidates with a third of the evidence each.

Technical (points 8, 12, 13) is down to the agency or person looking after the website. You can check point 12 yourself in two minutes, the guide for that is under Can AI crawlers read your website?. Point 13 is the most expensive item on the list, because with some website builders it means a rebuild.

How to work through the list

  1. Choose three pages where customers should get an answer to a question: a service page, an advice post, the about us page.
  2. Go through the 15 points for each page and mark them "met", "partly" or "open".
  3. Start with all the points marked "low" effort. That's nine out of fifteen.
  4. Bundle points 6, 7 and 14 into a single session: open the directories, decide on the spelling, update it everywhere.
  5. Hand points 8 and 13 to your technical team as a clearly worded brief.

An everyday example: an electrical firm in Weinfelden has a page called "EV charging station". The text starts with two paragraphs about electric mobility in general, the costs appear in the fourth section, there's no date, and the author is listed as "Admin". After the rework, the page opens with a sentence on what an installation in a detached house typically costs with this firm and how long it takes, carries "As of: October 2026" and the owner's name with their role. No technical changes at all, one hour of work, and the page now meets eight more points than before.

What the list can't do

The list makes a page readable and verifiable. It doesn't make an AI favour it. No provider fully documents which sources a model draws on for a given question, and nobody can guarantee a mention. But the list does ensure your page is in the running at all. The free AI check shows in about a minute whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini currently find your website. The list is then your action plan for what the check reveals.

Frequently asked questions

Does every page need to meet all 15 points?

No. The identity and technical points apply to the whole website and are sorted once. The content points apply per page, and there it's worth putting in the effort first on the pages where customers should get a specific question answered.

Is FAQ schema enough for an AI to use my answers?

No. Structured data makes content machine readable, but it doesn't replace a clear answer in the visible text. Google has only shown FAQ rich results for a few page types since 2023 anyway, and whether language models weight FAQ markup specially isn't documented.

How often should I repeat the checklist?

Thoroughly once at the start, then for every new or revised page. Also check the identity points after every office move, every name change and every change of phone number, because that's when the directories drift out of sync.

Does the list apply to Google Search too, or just ChatGPT?

Both. Google doesn't set special rules for its AI features, it refers to the same principles for helpful content as for classic search. A page that meets the list is also better placed in search results.
